metomi.com ideas to nurture young children readers!

Welcome to metomi.com, your online source of great reads and activities for children! We are enjoying some of our favourite children's books by Dr. Seuss! Having read through a number of Dr. Seuss books - long, short, more serious, more lighthearted - these ones are definitely on our extended shortlist! We enjoy Dr. Seuss' mastery of rhyme, his giant imagination and his very readable (and very re-readable) books! Meet an interesting fox with his signature blue socks, two tribes of creatures quite fussed about features, and a boy who delights in his house filled with strange sights (these books have even got us amateurs at metomi.com rhyming!) We've left out some other good Dr. Seuss children's books which are equally compelling but perhaps a little long for the average child. Happy Reading! Title: The Sneetches And Other Stories

Author/Illustrator: Dr. Seuss

In this children's story we meet creatures called Sneetches, who live in one of two tribes. The tribes are identical except that one tribe contains Sneetches who have a green star on their bellIes. And as you may have guessed, there exists a pecking order in this otherwise idyllic world. The star-bellied creatures are convinced that they are superior to their star-less counterparts, and what is fascinating is that the star-less ones buy into that silly rhetoric too. Along comes an odd fellow with even odder machines who promises to rectify the situation, for a small fee of course. A chaotic mix of machines whirring, Sneetches "starring" and "unstarring", and currency exchanging goes on until the Sneetches themselves aren't even sure who's who anymore. But of course the wonderful thing is...they realize they're no longer fussed about it, either. A fun children's story for the kids and a satisfying moral for the grown-ups ;).

Title: There's A Wocket In My Pocket!

Author/Illustrator: Dr. Seuss

What child wouldn't want a group of fantastic little creatures living at home? So much more interesting than an older sibling or a microwave is our opinion ;). In this children's story we meet a little boy who is eager to introduce us to all his friends...although they are not exactly what readers have in mind! Instead of a favourite teddy bear, we meet a family of Nupboards living in the Cupboards. Instead of a shadow friend, there's a gentle Findow in the Window. And just when we think there's something scary in the cellar, we're introduced instead to a charming group of cellar "dwellars". Not too long a children's book, but big on fun and the entrance of each new friend tends to bring smiles to our young readers.

Title: Fox in Socks

Author/Illustrator: Dr. Seuss

We have read this children's book many, many times! We enjoy the adventures that the charismatic Fox in Socks takes its readers on throughout the book - an exhilarating rollercoaster ride of tongue-twisters, silly stories and fantastic creatures. And we seem to fare better than the Fox's unwitting companion who finds the blue-socked fellow and the chaotic, fast-moving experience just a teeny bit overwhelming. Of course the fox is quite oblivious to his own eccentricities until he himself becomes part of the scenery, leaving a very satisfied companion to go his separate way. Lots of smiles as a bedtime read for your children!

Title: Hop On Pop

Author/Illustrator: Dr. Seuss

Another classic Dr. Seuss children's book and another long-time favourite in our home! Like Fox in Socks, it's another example of Dr. Seuss in top form, turning out delightful rhymes as if it was child's play (sorry - couldn't resist the pun)! And for some reason, there is something hilarious about children "hopping on their Pop". We at metomi.com would have to agree, having experienced the situation firsthand (many, many times...just ask Pop)! The stories are short and loosely strung together and we enjoy their brevity, humour and silliness!

Title: McElligot's Pool

Author/Illustrator: Dr. Seuss

And now for something a little different. McElligot's Pool caught our attention because it sweetly captures the brilliance of children, the wonder of childhood, and the precious gift of imagination. In the story a child is teased for his attempt to fish in what looks to be a small pond filled with everything but fish. But the boy simply explains the possibility of fish as only a child can. That the child's theory seems somewhat hard to believe does not stop readers from thinking that there is still merit in questioning what is generally accepted. We at metomi.com are convinced that this very thinking can (literally) make the world go 'round. Enjoy!
