Title: My Beautiful World
Artist: Jack Grunsky
Although Jack Grunsky was not born in Canada, he definitely has established Canadian roots! This fabulous children's CD by Jack Grunsky was played endlessly on our car CD player, with repeated encores from our children! We have seen Jack perform at the Solar Stage in Toronto on several occasions and have greatly enjoyed these live children's performances. Jack Grunsky has a soothing, musical voice that children find appealing, and his band is often using musical instruments that children do not see everyday. At his shows, there is usually an explanation of the song's inspiration, often an introduction to a new language or culture, and always a catchy melody that appeals to children and parents! We found so many songs on this album that are delightful. Our favourites are It's a Great Day, Penguin Shuffle, Mediterranean Sea, Mayim and Meadow, the latter being an instrumental (never underestimate a child's ability to appreciate a purely instrumental song). You will hear his daughter Cosima's talents on this children's CD as well, who we have also seen perform - also a real treat!
Title: Sea Notes
Artist: Bobs & Lolo
We were first introduced to Bobs & Lolo on tv, on our local Treehouse channel. Our children enjoyed the bright colors, bright smiles and happy melodies in the music videos from this Vancouver Island duo! We then had the pleasure of meeting the Bobs & Lolo at the Toronto Zoo, after enjoying a live Bobs & Lolo children's performance during the zoo's Halloween festivities for the kiddies. Bobs & Lolo not only have beautiful voices, they also sing in beautiful harmony. It was a pleasure to hear them sing live, our children enjoyed it very much. We purchased the Sea Notes children's CD after the performance and it certainly did not disappoint! Our favourite children's songs on Sea Notes include Ocean Blue, Mr. Shark, See, a Sea Lion, Sea Turtles Are Special to Me, and Cindy Seahorse. Cindy Seahorse is a pretty song about a lonely seahorse who finds herself a friend. Although there is a happy ending to Cindy Seahorse, the tune is a bit sombre and sad -- although my daughter loved it anyway (never underestimate a child's ability to appreciate a not-so-bubbly song :)).
Title: Goldirocks
Artist: Judy & David
If you're a Canadian family, then you've probably enjoyed a performance by Judy & David, whether on Treehouse tv or live in their many wonderful children's performances. Our children have grown up with Judy & David on tv, and recently we had the pleasure of watching Judy & David's GoldiRocks musical production, the duo's talented and funny interpretation of a familiar children's story. Judy plays GoldiRocks, a young girl with a love of guitar, who runs away from home when her concerned mother tries to get her to focus on other things. As you probably guessed already, she meets up with some furry friends who help her find her way back home. The songs were witty and the lyrics were catchy and we also greatly enjoyed the troupe of children performers! Overall the performance was top notch, so we purchased the GoldiRocks CD as a souvenir - our favourites include Once Upon a Time, Bird Brain, and the Three Little Bowls/Chairs/Beds! Happy Singing!
Title: Duck in New York City
Artist: Connie Kaldor
Aunt Tina bought this children's CD, Duck in New York City, for our children a few years ago. We love Connie Kaldor's gentle, soothing voice and her wonderful melodies and lyrics! We have had lots of fun with the songs on this CD, our favourites being Duck in New York City, Seed in the Ground, Slug Opera and Honey Honey Honey. Seed in the Ground is our children's top pick: we have enjoyed some great pretend play pretending to plant a seed, then watching it grow from a seed to a shoot and eventually to a tree, just like the story Connie Kaldor tells in her song. Aunt Tina recently enjoyed a Connie Kaldor performance at a local Toronto venue, and we look forward to a time when we too will get to enjoy a similar event!
